Novalis Tx For Physicians

Novalis TxTM Radiosurgery

Offer fast and effective cancer treatment and greater access to advanced treatment options with Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery at Muskogee Regional Medical Center. Novalis Tx™ radiosurgery treats cancerous and non-cancerous conditions of the entire body using one-of-a-kind shaped-beam technology. Shaping the beam precisely to the patient’s tumor ensures that the best possible treatment dose is delivered while healthy tissue is protected.

It’s non-invasive, shaped-beam radiosurgery that takes just minutes out of your patient’s day. They go in, get treated and get back to life.

Novalis Tx Radiosurgery Benefits

As one of the most advanced cancer treatment options available, Novalis Tx radiosurgery is changing the face of cancer treatment, and has already helped thousands of people continue to go to work, spend time with family and friends, and take part in their favorite activities, all while fighting cancer.

Precise

  • Shapes the cancer-fighting radiation beam around your patient’s tumor or lesion, ensuring that the maximum prescribed dose of high-energy radiation is delivered to the entire tumor or lesion
  • Protects surrounding healthy tissue
  • Adapts treatment to your patient’s breathing and other body movements so that radiation delivery is always safe, complete and accurate

Fast

  • Delivers treatment in as little as 15-20 minutes for a more comfortable treatment experience when compared with other radiosurgery treatment options
  • Reduces the likelihood of patient or tumor movements, ensuring the highest possible level of treatment accuracy
  • Offers one-time treatment or a series of treatments based on your patient’s doctors’ recommendations

Personalized

  • Offers frameless and frame-based treatment of cranial indications as well as extra-cranial treatment of spine, lung, liver and prostate lesions
  • Flexible treatment options—single stage, hypo- and hyper-fractionation; circular and conformal beams; dynamic conformal arcs; IMRT— ensure that your patients receive the best treatment for their condition—other radiosurgery devices are limited to only one treatment modality
  • Delivers one of the highest dose rates to treat tumors deep inside the body or brain
  • Offers hope to those with clinical conditions once considered untreatable and for whom surgery is not an option

Non-Invasive

  • Frameless radiosurgery offers a more patient-friendly treatment experience with a custom-fit mask, as compared to being locked in an invasive head ring for an extended procedure

Conditions Novalis Tx Radiosurgery Treats

Novalis Tx radiosurgery treats cancerous and non-cancerous conditions including:

  • Acoustic neuromas
  • Arteriovenous malformations (AVM)
  • Brain metastases/gliomas

How Novalis Tx Radiosurgery Works

Novalis Tx radiosurgery is a high tech radiation delivery system powered by innovative image-guidance and motion management tools. The powerful linear accelerator rotates around the patient to deliver treatment beams anywhere in the body from virtually any angle. The image-guidance and motion management tools provide your patient’s doctors with detailed information about the shape, size and position of the tumor, guide setup and positioning, and monitor motion during treatment.

Novalis Tx radiosurgery features innovative software that will leverage physicians’ skills, providing patients with consistently better, standardized and more cost-effective healthcare. These tools and accurate dose calculations allow for better targeting of tumors while providing motion management for precise dose delivery, which supports better protection of nearby organs. The gating technique pauses radiation delivery until the tumor is in the optimal position, sparing normal tissue.

Novalis Tx Radiosurgery Treatment Advantage

Other radiosurgery systems use circular beams of radiation to treat tumors and lesions. Most tumors or lesions are irregular in shape so the circular dose cannot completely conform to their exact shape. Novalis Tx radiosurgery shapes the radiation beam precisely to your patient’s tumor or lesion, ensuring that the best possible treatment dose is delivered while healthy tissue is protected. The radiation beam also adapts to patient breathing and other body movements to continuously maintain safe, complete and accurate treatment.

Novalis Tx radiosurgery offers the highest standard in patient comfort. Treatments last only minutes and patients wear a frameless custom-fit mask, rather than being locked in an invasive head ring.

Importance of Fast Treatment

Fast treatment is more comfortable and reduces the likelihood of body or tumor movements, increasing overall accuracy. In addition to offering one of the fastest treatment times, Novalis Tx radiosurgery continuously tracks your patient’s body and tumor motion and automatically adjusts the beam of radiation, maintaining the highest possible level of treatment accuracy.

Novalis Tx Radiosurgery Treatment Versatility

Novalis Tx radiosurgery offers both stereotactic radiosurgery and fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy treatments. A team of specialists will recommend the best treatment method based on your patient’s individual case.

While both methods typically involve a similar total dose, fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy delivers treatment in smaller amounts. Studies have shown that fractionated treatment is necessary to ensure effective treatment for some tumors and protect healthy tissue. This is particularly true for some types of tumors, such as those near auditory nerves where extending treatment over a number of fractions can provide better treatment outcomes and preserve a patient’s hearing.

Radiation Effects on a Tumor or Lesion

Radiosurgery and radiotherapy use high-energy treatment beams to deliver the prescribed dose directly to tumor cells, causing them to die. Treatment results, visible on follow-up scans, may include shrinkage of the tumor or no further tumor growth. Because cell destruction and absorption of the cells within a patient’s system can be a lengthy process, it may take up to six months before doctors can determine the effect of treatment.

Reduced Side Effects

Novalis Tx radiosurgery treatment is not painful in most cases and does not require anesthesia. Typically, there is no scarring or disfigurement and little risk of infection, compared to conventional surgery.

While side effects are minimized, patients may experience a headache, dizziness and fatigue immediately following treatment, so driving is not recommended. Your patient’s doctor will discuss specific side effects that may occur depending on the overall treatment plan.

Novalis Tx radiosurgery is not appropriate for all patients. Serious side effects may occur, such as peripheral tissue damage. Possible side effects include fatigue, headache and nausea, and may require treatment with steroids. Some doctors may opt to use a minimally invasive head frame for certain procedures.
